Installing John the Ripper is relatively easy if all the prerequisites are installed first. The documentation on these libraries is not easily found in a single source. This video covers the complete installation of the prerequisites libraries, plus RexGen and John the Ripper itself. The libraries provide extra features and formats that are not available in the default version of John the Ripper. MPI Support is included in this demonstration. This installation was done on Kali Linux, but the steps would be similar for any flavor of Debian Linux.
